Study shows low rates of rearrest with online cognitive-behavioral treatment
LEXINGTON, KY (August 25, 2017)—adventfs.com (Advent), a leading provider of technology solutions for local government, has released a five-year study of rearrest data for offenders undergoing online cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment as part of misdemeanor diversions in Kentucky.
The study was released at the Kentucky Prosecutor’s Conference in Lexington, KY.
The study was developed by examining public arrest records for offenders who had taken Advent’s online CBT courses as part of prosecutor diversions of misdemeanor alcohol, assault, drug, and theft charges. Findings of the study included:
- Only 25.7% of those completing an Advent online CBT class were rearrested for any offense within two years.
- The three-year rearrest rate was 31.6% and the five-year rate was 34.3%.
- Only 15.5% of those who took an Advent CBT course were rearrested within five years for the same type of criminal offense for which they received their diversion.
- These rates were much lower than reincarceration rates published by the KY Department of Corrections for similar offenses within the same time period.
“This study reinforces findings from other fields that online courses are as successful, if not more successful, than classroom treatment,” said Josh Hartlage, President of adventfs.com. “It also supports our contention that, in most cases, avoiding incarceration and sentencing is likely the best route to putting offenders on the right path for the future.”
The Advent eLearning platform includes a full portfolio of online evidence-based programs using CBT curricula to address misdemeanor offenses and criminal justice agency treatment needs. In addition to the online courses, the Advent eLearning platform gives agencies a full suite of tools for managing cases from start to finish, including tracking, notifications, reporting, court forms and much more.
